In early June, Ukraine carried out one of the largest attacks since the start of the war, called “Operation Spider Web”. The offensive used drones to strike strategic airfields in five regions of Russia, including Murmansk and Irkutsk, causing fires on several aircraft, some of which had nuclear capabilities.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the operation was inspired by tactics used by drug cartels to smuggle drones into enemy territory. The equipment was hidden in false truck ceilings and remotely activated, ensuring that the transport went unnoticed until the time of the attack.
To make the mission possible, a front company was created to purchase vehicles, rent warehouses, and hire Russian drivers who were unaware of what they were transporting.
Additionally, the Ukrainian government admitted to bribing Russian customs officials, described as “highly corrupt,” without relying on external smugglers.
